Essential Magic Conference Day Three - Session One

July 17th, 2010 by Magic Convention Guide

The final day’s first session of The Essential Magic Conference was hosted by Max Maven

Interestingly we were told during this session that the final of todays session will be open to ALL, but will feature no explanations, We’ll bring you more on that after the next session.

Finn Jon was first up on this session talking through his style of impromptu magic, he was explaining about being able to do magic anywhere with anything, firstly he demostrated a spinning hover card with a borrowed credit card before ’smoking the credit card’.

Finn Jon then when into idea talking mode, rolling out idea after idea on magic, it was great to watch, multiply balls, cut and restored string, before moving onto some wonderful principals on producing tennis balls..

He was rolling out ideas so quick it was hard to keep up and soak them in, but in a good way, all the contents of a 2 hour lecture in 20 mins!

Next up, Gene Matsuura talking on something he entitled ‘Better Than Natural’

Gene talked extensively about creating a blind spot in your spectators brain, using Slydini’s ‘Helicopter Card’ as an example. It was a great talk as Gene ran through the ‘moment’ and why it worked, more importantly how to create it!

Explaining this mix of gestures and looks, he demonstrated the method with paper balls over the head with a spectator, before using the same principal as he went through Slydini’s coins through table. An excellent talk!

Paulino Gil, who talked on organising magic festivals yesterday was back, this time with a lovely performance using nothing more than string and his fingers!

With a spectator holding his fingers, he caused loops of string to penetrate his fingers, jump off, and over his fingers, before they finally linked.

Guy Hollingworth then talked on ‘7 lessons I’ve learned from a packet trick’

Running through one of his early card effects, he explained why he thought it was a bad card trick. Using seven main points or rules if you like on how it could be improved.

The talk was great, and extremely interesting as he went through the aspects of reconstructing the effect, following these ‘rules’.

Finally he performed the trick again, with the new method.

Anton Lopez caused quite a stir in the chat as he performed ‘The Tenebrio’

He opened with a sea of moving origami boats on the table, folding up a bill, placing it on the table as it also moved. He then caused other objects to move, a coin, cards, a folded bill as a swan.

The method was extremely creative, but, possibly not something everyone would agree with, or perform.

Jason England, gave a very quick talk on something that was ‘magic’

JasonEngland

A tale about a child who wasn’t convinced he believed in Santa Claus, the story told of how the childs father took him to Disney world, and with some slight of hand, allowed Santa Claus to address his son by name.

Eric Eswin talked about what FISM was, and how it is made up. He talked about the history of FISM, and previous winners, as well as the future of FISM
