EMC 2012 – Session 1 – Bill Malone

July 27th, 2012 - Magic Convention Guide

Essential Magic Conference

We often forget about what we are doing when we do magic and perform for audiences. Bill Malone talked through ‘what I’ve learned along the way’, a wonderful talk on as it says, what he’s learnt along his career, and what we shouldn’t forget.

In his classical Bill Malone way, Bill showed us a number of slides (you have to be here to understand!!)… and recounted some solid advice that has got him to where he is now.

He talked about how it’s ‘not what you do, its how you do it’ and that you also have to be a ‘likeable person’ for people to like you, no matter how good you are at magic.

Bill talked about his time at bars performing magic, the ups, and humorous moments, and what he learnt from every place he’s worked..

..and ultimately.. ‘make your magic entertaining’ a great talk from a wonderful man!

EMC 2012 – Session 1 – Guy Hollingworth

July 27th, 2012 - Magic Convention Guide

Essential Magic Conference

You cannot be totally mesmerised when you listen to Guy Hollingworth speak. Performing a wonderful selected, torn and semi restored card, with the spectator seemingly having a free choice of  where their selected card is found in the deck. A true ‘what the…’ effect that defies explanation… Elegant magic from a true master of magic.

EMC 2012 – Session 1 – Michel Clavello

July 27th, 2012 - Magic Convention Guide

Essential Magic Conference

Michel Clavello gave a talk entitled ‘The Invisible Hand’ which centred around a magic and gambling device we all know, and some have used.

Performing a few routines using this gimmick device, including silk vanishes and appearances, as well as a cut and restored rope. Using this gimmick, the routines were extremely clean and convincing.

Michel talked about the origins and descriptions of this gimmick in books by Robert Houdin and others, before running a video of exactly how the gimmick worked for gamblers, and then talking about ‘gravity driven’ gimmick, and how exactly it is set up for use.

Even when you know what was going on, it still looked like real magic! A wonderful talk for those interested in this particular type of gimmick and method, one for those who have dismissed it before… watch the talk and be amazed!!

Sorry if we are a bit vague here, as we don’t talk about physical methods and gimmicks in public! Of course if you haven’t registered yet. You can still register during the conference, and catch up on the sessions we’ve been talking about on demand, and what the video and explanation of this particular gimmick!!

EMC 2012 Session 1 – Denis Behr

July 27th, 2012 - Magic Convention Guide

Essential Magic Conference

Denis Behr, whom we also have to wish happy birthday to as well, was brave enough to use David Williamson as his assistant, and performed some wonderful effects, using some fairly simple set ups of the deck, if you know what we mean 😉

Amongst other things Denis talked about how to handle these setups to make them look even more convincing to throw off the ideas that the deck is anything less than completely normal.

Another section of Denis’ talk was how to ‘backwards engineer’ your deck, to let you get to the end effect easily, all rather clever!!

The talk was full of great information and methods on deck work, and definitely one of the sessions to rewatch on demand and on the DVD’s after the conference to soak it all in!!

EMC 2012 Session 1 – Armando Lucero

July 27th, 2012 - Magic Convention Guide

Essential Magic Conference

Armando gave a wonderful performance, manipulating cards to music as they simply changed as he twirled them round in his fingers.

He followed this with a lovely card card table based presentation of four blank faced cards ‘printing’ very slowly under his hands…

EMC 2012 Session 1 – Eric Mead

July 27th, 2012 - Magic Convention Guide

Essential Magic Conference

EMC 2012 kicked off with Eric Mead giving the first talk of the weekend. He imparted some good sound knowledge of performing learning and ‘being’ a magician.

This included what helps you, including that failure is our friend and how this can help you become a better magician. Of course Eric talked about reading more, as well as thinking about a ‘show’, and performing as often as possible. He talked about many of the things we, as magicians, often forget about when we perform and work with out magic.

Some great sound advise to start of our learning for the weekend.

If you haven’t registered yet. You can still register during the conference, and catch up on the sessions we’ve been talking about on demand.
