EMC 2012 – Session 9 – Dani DaOrtiz – Great Expectations

July 29th, 2012 - Magic Convention Guide

Essential Magic Conference
I never know what to watch with Dani DaOrtiz, his magic of him. Dani is just so entertaining to watch, but also his card magic is just stunning, and his signing isnt too bad either!

A wonderful trick as always from Dani, entertaining and a great fooler as well, two spectators, which one thinking of a number, the other spectator takes a card, a free choice, they can change their mind if they want. Dani puts the card back into the deck and the other spectator is asked for his number he thought of, he counts down in the deck, the card is at the spectators chose number!

Dani then followed this with a talk afterwards about what a spectator remembers by feeling, and the importance of how you interact and work with your spectator(s) amongst other things was just as good.

He talked about how bad it is to practise in front of a mirror, and the best spectator to practise your magic on, is.. a spectator..

Hugely entertaining talk on all levels!

EMC 2012 – Session 9 – Topas

July 29th, 2012 - Magic Convention Guide

Essential Magic Conference

Topas performed his ‘Hawaiian Wonder’, with lots of hip action and swaying from Topas and assistant. A chosen orange ‘vanishes’ leaving only the skin, whilst the juice appears in a glass on a table.

Wonderfully entertaining as always from Topas.

EMC 2012 – Session 9 – Dynamo – Magician Impossible

July 29th, 2012 - Magic Convention Guide

Essential Magic Conference
Dynamo is a big name within the UK at the moment, the second series of his Magician Impossible has just aired on British TV, and Marvin Berglas joined Dynamo to talk to him about his magic and career.

Dynamo explained that his background was quite tough, his father was not around, and his mum was quite young when he was born. Dynamo was close to his grand parents, and his grandfather taught him magic to avoid or at least defuse the bullying that Dynamo suffered at school as a child. Dynamo also suffers from crohn’s disease, an inflammatory bowel disease, yet despite all this his he is now hugely successful.

Essential Magic Conference

Dynamo talked about how as a youngster he picked up a number of videos as they were then of people like Daryl, which he worked with.

He talked about how many organisations didnt take him seriously for performance, and he ended up, frustrated, going to the Princes Trust (a beneficiary fund set up by HRH Prince Charles) and getting funding to buy a camcorder, from which he filmed and created ‘Underground Magic’, from which he was commissioned by Chanel Four to create ‘Dynamo – estate of mind’ which showed some of Dynamo’s background,

Marvin talked with Dynamo about the Walking across the river thames stunt, in which Dynamo explained some of the issues with the stunt, and that Dynamo is now working on Season Three of Magician Impossible.

Essential Magic Conference

A great interview with a young magician who’s really made a name for himself through pure determination.

EMC 2012 – Session 9 – Yann Frisch

July 29th, 2012 - Magic Convention Guide

Essential Magic Conference
Yann Frisch came to the stage for what we thought was a performance of his FISM winning act, but, maybe as a better bonus, he started to talk about the moves and methods used within his winning act.

Yann showed the moves he used for the act, which was just wonderful to watch… every move so convincing.. a great session

EMC 2012 – Session 9 – Mike Caveney – Another Lost Illusion Explained

July 29th, 2012 - Magic Convention Guide

Luis de Matos welcomed us back to sadly the final session in the Essential Magic Conference Trilogy.

Essential Magic Conference

Mike Caveney talked about the Magic History Conference, and how he decided to reproduce Paul Valadon ‘Well I’m’ illusion, where a lady vanishes from a table top.

He talked about how during the research he used ask alexander to look for any information on the illusions (and as an EMC member you’ll get one months access to!)

The actual original method of the ‘Well I’m’ illusion is fairly simple, but as Mike explained, it wasnt a great workable method on a real stage. Mike continued to talk about he improved the original method to be workable on stage, and for a modern audience.

We obviously wont talk about the method here, but the session was a great history lesson and insight into historic illusions.

A totally captivating talk again from Mike.
