Places are disappearing fast at one of the UK’s most popular magic events, with less than 50 now remaining.

The South Tyneside International Magic Convention, which returns for its ninth bumper year from Friday, March 9, annually attracts hundreds of professional performers and magic fans from around the world.

For the past few years organisers South Tyneside Council and magician Martin Duffy have limited the number of delegates at the event, in an effort to preserve its popular intimate feel and ensure all attendees are given the chance to make the most of the experience.

As a result the three-day convention, which features a variety of lectures, workshops, performances and dealer exhibitions, has regularly been a sell out with 2012 set to be no exception.

Martin said: “The South Tyneside Magic Festival is a firm favourite among many performers and attendees who appreciate its community spirit and the opportunity to participate much more thoroughly than they can at larger events. This year’s event look set to be just as popular, with less than 50 places still remaining.”

The South Tyneside International Magic Convention, which runs from Friday, March 9 until Sunday, March 11, has been specifically designed to appeal to professional magicians and the most ardent magic fans and will feature some of the most respected performers from around the world.

Those starring in the stellar line-up include American’s David Regal and Levent, German card magic expert Christian Schenk, International Man of Mirth, Rob Torres, family entertainer Tricky Ricky, leading stage comedy hypnotist Robert Temple and renowned communicator Simon Raybould.

The convention ticket price, which has been held at the 2010/2011 rate of £65, includes entry to a variety of workshops, lectures close-up shows and dealer events that will be held at the Customs House, South Shields across the three days, as well as entry to two International Gala Shows which are open to the general public.

Convention attendees will also receive free entry to an exclusive Midnight Show, to be held at a secret venue nearby, with a number of masterclasses by Robert Temple, David Regal, Levent, Rob Torres and Markus Beldig also available for a small additional fee.

More names have just been added to the line up for this years NMC 2012 Convention which takes place 31st March - 1st April 2012.

David Tomkins will be performing in the Childrens showtime and will subsequently providing his childrens lecture to all registrants. The weekend will also see two History of Mystery lectures, the first features Ian Baradell and his fascinating talk on Tenyo, Ian has the 3rd biggest collection in the world. The second talk will see Paul Freeman doing a talk about Herr Aldabert Frickell, a mysterious German Magician who is buried in Scarborough.

Other acts booked include Matthew Wright, Luke Jermay, Paul Gordon, Mark Shortland , Lee Thompson, High Jinx, Make Believe Magic, Richard Cadell and Sooty, Jeanie and Clivo, Brian Sefton and Doug Gregg.

The NMC also offers the ‘Partner Pass’ where full registrants can attend all the lectures and shows for just £60 while their partner enjoys Scarborough and during the weekend the partner gets tickets for all four shows. The Gala Show, the Children’s Show, the Junior Stage competition and the Northern Juniors Show all for just £20.

A former child magician who became the youngest president of the UK’s longest-running magical society will be headlining a special North East event later this spring.

As part of the South Tyneside International Magic Festival 2012, the Customs House, South Shields will be hosting a Family Magic Extravaganza on Wednesday, March 7 2012

The two-hour show, sponsored by specialist retailer MagicBox, has been designed to cater for all the family and will include performances from some of the North East’s best magicians, compered by pantomime star Tommy the Trumpeter.

Leading the line-up is multi-award winner Graeme Shaw, partner at MagicBox and the youngest person ever to be elected president of the Newcastle upon Tyne Magic Circle – one of the oldest and most successful magic societies in the UK.

Graeme has been practising magic since he was nine years old and has since developed a range of instructional DVDs and magical inventions which are used by magicians around the world.

He will be joined by leading children’s entertainer and balloon modeller Mr Twister, and versatile performer Tony Junior, who has clocked up more than 25,000 mesmerising performances across the UK.

Magical-double act Michael Jordan and Tamsyn Sear, better known as High Jinx, will also be taking to the Customs House stage, performing a thrilling mix of magic, illusion, escapology and circus skills.

In 2011 the multi-award winning duo were runners-up in the European FISM (International Federation of Magic Societies) championships in Blackpool and will go on to represent the UK in the FISM world championships in July 2012.

This year’s Family Magic Extravaganza, which forms part of the ninth annual South Tyneside International Magic Festival, will also include a special appearance by the South Tyneside Dance Workshop.

Graeme Shaw said: “Magic has grown in popularity again in recent years thanks to the popularity of films and television shows such as Harry Potter and current BBC hit The Magicians. Our Family Magic Extravaganza has been designed to help people of all ages indulge this new-found love of all things magical and see it for themselves in the relaxed and intimate setting of a North East theatre.”
