EMC 2012 – Session 6 Summary – Daniel Madison, Cyril Takayama, Bill Malone, Norberto Jansenson

July 29th, 2012 - damian

Daniel Madison – explanation of his previous performance - I’m not going to explain it. It’s bloody excellent though.

Max talked to Cyril Takayama in a live interview via Skype about his new TV series, where he (via lots and lots of make up) plays members of his own family going on holiday. His fat cousin, his lecherous Uncle, and even his Aunt. Got to see a little clip of it. The show has been sold to 22 countries and working on others, and is a big hit in India. Hawaii sun and extensive prothestic make up means he would sweat profusely, 4 hours of make up, extremely uncomfortable, but amazing results. We were then treated to a previously unseen clip of him, well, making fire come out of his empty hand with sleeve rolled up! Crazy.

Bill Malone Performance with so many gags, everyone is genuinely laughing out loud, and a quick look at cards from mouth and why he does it and when he does it. Short, but lovely.

Norberto Jansenson read in an ancient language, before making everyone close their eyes and tells us a story. Talking about the importance of the magical moment. The coin is in the hand. Tap. The coin goes. You need to think about the importance of the actual second it vanishes and focus on that. He then talks about the importance of secrets.

EMC 2012 – Session 6 – Bill Kalush

July 28th, 2012 - Magic Convention Guide

Essential Magic Conference
Bill Kalush is a man with a library anyone would be envious of. The Conjuring Arts Research Center contains a library of phenomenal size of magic material and books. Bill has used this for a number of research projects, including his Houdini book. The library is searchable via Ask Alexander (as a EMC registrant we’ve heard you might be pleasantly surprised tomorrow) and is an amazing research tool.

Bill talked about research he’s done into the history of card magic, which has uncovered the fact that a lot of the methods and move we still use within magic, date back much further than many of us believed into the 1600’s and 1700’s

Showing a huge collection of pages from extremely old, and some extremely rare books, he highlighted a number of what we may think as modern tricks, described in some form (or the ideas that the tricks are based on) including the 21 card trick!

It was a fascinating talk, and would have been great if there’d been more time.

EMC 2012 – Session 6 – Eric Mead

July 28th, 2012 - Magic Convention Guide

Essential Magic Conference
Eric Mead took to the stage to honour Tim Conover, who sadly died last year (2011). Tim willed the rights to his effects to his family, Eric Mead talked with the family, and is pleased to announce that he will be writing a book of the magic of Conover.

He then proceeded to demonstrate one of Tim’s favourite effects… a lovely lovely effect, we urge you to watch.

EMC 2012 – Session 6 – Luis De Matos – The Chaos Card Mystery

July 28th, 2012 - Magic Convention Guide

Essential Magic Conference
Luis de Matos took to the stage to explain his earlier effect from the previous session.

He talked about the effect that he created for this theatre show ‘Chaos’ and some of the background on the effects that he based his version of the effect on.

Luis explained that there were a number of things that were important for him for the effect, these included that anyone can participate, that no one needs to know the name of playing cards, that the effect continues after the show has finished and that it is difficult to backwards engineer the effect and it should play big to everyone, so that everyone can enjoy it… and more importantly, if everything failed… there’s a plan B!

Luis puts so much thought into his effects and shows, and its evident when he explains the process and method. No Seriously you NEED to watch the explanation Luis gives about how he does this effect… trust us!

Essential Magic Conference
Norberto Jansenson asked us to close our eyes… to listen… to imagine..

To feel the smoke as we opened our hands as a coin vanished in our hand…

Norberto talked about what he felt magic and a magician is… in a motivational presentation, he mixed reference to religion, philosophy and magic into a passionate speech.

EMC 2012 – Session 6 – Bill Malone

July 28th, 2012 - Magic Convention Guide

Essential Magic Conference
Bill Malone, before he even started told us what we all know, just how amazing the Essential Magic Conference is, and how much he’s been inspired by the speakers so far.

Bill is a great to watch, funny, clever, and has great comic timing. Reducing the room of speakers to what sounded like tears (for the right reasons!), and crippled the room with laughter..

I’m sure he did some magic, but I was laughing too much to make notes…!
