EMC 2012 – Session 7 – Gene Matsuura – Winston Freer and The Maxam Ring Illusion

July 29th, 2012 by Magic Convention Guide

Essential Magic Conference

Winston Freer is not a well known name and lived from 1910-  1981, finally ending up in a physiatric institution. But he did perform under the name Alladin and later Doc Maxam.

Gene Matsuura talked through a number of effects and routines that Winston performed, and how unique they were. Many classic effects presented in an exceptional way, including a rice bowls routine with clear bowls.

Gene also explained some of the effects that Freer would do that were completely unique to him, including freezing freely chosen coloured water in his hand.

He described other effects that sounded completely impossible effects that Freer would perform, some of which sounded like true magic that couldnt have taken place, however Gene assured us that Freer did perform these effects!

Gene explained how he became interested in Freer; seeing an advert for Maxam Linking Rings, an seemingly impossible version of the linking rings, with totally examinable rings. The Method… genius!
